It’s all about creating a good first impression. The moment you open the front door to a visitor the décor is the first thing they see and the lighting needs to be considered with care. Hallways come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. The challenge is to achieve the desired effect in keeping with the furnishings, decorations and period in which the building was constructed.
The style of light used depends to a great extent on the height of the ceiling and the size of the space. A long room with a high ceiling might lend itself to two or more pendants and a strategically placed table lamp on a hall table. Multiple pendant fittings make a nice feature hanging over a stair well and provide an even light over the stair treads.
Larger rooms however allow us to be more adventurous with our choices. The whole area could be lit by soft light from uplighters complemented by a crystal chandelier or a multi-arm brass or chrome chandelier over the stair well.(Some thought should be given to the servicing of the light fitting as the lamps may difficult or impossible to change if the chandelier is positioned incorrectly.) Another alterative modern design would be to use down lighters in the ceiling and recessed tread lighting in the staircase.
